A couple of years ago I bought a skiboat from a friend. I knew it had some problems.
One afternoon while I was out wakeboarding with some friends, including my wife and kids. For some reason (I don't remember why) I opened up my engine compartment. I noticed that one of the engine bolts had come loose. After scratching my head for a minute I reached down to at least hand tighten the bolt. It pushed in without me twisting it. Then I pulled it out without twisting it. It felt like there was no wood under the fiberglass. I started to notice all of the discoloration. I got out a screwdriver and started thumping around. Soon it became obvious that the entire engine mount had rotted out. I very carefully brought the boat back to the marina, and loaded it onto the trailer.
I started cutting out where I could see rotten wood. The entire floor came out, and every one of the stringers was rotten. At this point I realised that this was going to be a major project. I hate to admit it but I put it away for a couple of years. I seem to have scraped up enough money to do the project so I'm getting started this year.
I have worked with fiberglass before, but never to this scale. I don't really know anything about building boats, and I admit this project is a little intimidating. But as with any project I'm sure the hardest part is getting started. I'll be posting pictures of my progress, suscribe if you want to see this boat come together.
